What is a good collection frequency in collecting polled data in a historian?  1 second?  5 seconds?  30 seconds? one minute?  How can I determine what is best?

This is a great question and it comes down to what the Controls Engineers want to see. If you are actively tuning loops, doing vibration monitoring, or if the point’s value can drastically change in a short amount of time then the requirement for that tag will be in the 1-30 second range. For points that will not show frequently fresh data you may want to collect them every five minutes. For everything else a one minute asynchronous poll will work great assuming you don’t have an excruciatingly large amount of tags to collect. BTW, asynchronous poll once per minute means that it will check for new data every minute and only save the data if it is new.
