How much RAM should I have for a shadow server?  What about a collector?

In the latest PHD software change notice, Honeywell states the minimum amount of RAM for different size systems:
Collector

  • Small (up to 10,000 tags): 8 Gigabytes RAM
  • Medium (10,000 – 25,000 tags): 8 Gigabytes RAM
  • Large (25,000 – 50,000 tags): 8 Gigabytes RAM
  • Very Large (> 50,000 tags): Contact Honeywell

Shadow

  • Small (up to 10,000 tags): 8 Gigabytes RAM / 10 Gigabytes RAM if same node as SQL Database
  • Medium (10,000 – 25,000 tags): 8 Gigabytes RAM / 10 Gigabytes RAM if same node as SQL Database
  • Large (25,000 – 50,000 tags): 8 Gigabytes RAM / 10 Gigabytes RAM if same node as SQL Database
  • Very Large (> 50,000 tags): Contact Honeywell

Keep in mind that these are the minimum requirements and if you were to order a new server today, chances are that it would come with 16 Gigabytes of RAM. I would personally recommend 16 Gigabytes for every server if brand new and 32 Gigabytes if it is a Shadow with the SQL Database.

I agree with Taylor’s assessment that you would want, at a minimum, 16 GB of RAM and, if you have more than 10 users, and they use it heavily, go ahead and add some additional RAM.  I have not seen any customers complain that their server has too little RAM and that the software is using too little of it.
If SQL Server is located on the same box, you would want to increase the RAM because SQL Server likes to “cache” popular queries in RAM in case it is called for again.
